Part 2 Exercise 6: Exploring drawing and painting

In the front of the sketchbook, I included a contents page so It would be quicker to reference drawings if I needed.

I tried this exercise 12 different ways, the mediums I used were:

·       Pencil (mechanical and not)

·       Biro pen

·       Fine liner

·       White fine liner

·       Coloured pencils

·       Pastel

·       Felt tip pen

·       Watercolour pencils

·       Acrylic paint

The materials to draw/paint on were:

·       Sketchbook paper

·       Cardboard

·       Brown envelope

·       Kitchen roll

·       Magazine page

·       Tissue paper

·       Plain lined paper

Using the pencil and pen were the most comfortable and easy to use, they worked well on most of the materials but for some reason the cardboard seems to be too rough for the pen to make stable full lines sometimes especially because it was white and already running out, it only took a bit longer than I should, but it still turned out well. Using a pen on the tissue paper and brown envelop made the line work stand out becoming bolder for some reason, same with the kitchen roll it was like the ink leaked and spread ever so slightly creating a darker drawing which I liked. On one of the pages, I used a piece of loose graphite to create a negative drawing using a hard and soft eraser to bring out the light and general shape of the shoe whilst slightly darkening around some areas just for a more prominent effect. On another I used my non dominant had twice to draw, I really enjoyed the challenge it was difficult to make the lines fluid and my hand did not seem to do what I wanted it to. I think its one of my favourite pages I do not know why its wispy nature just looks wacky. Working with pastel I found it hard to get accurate shapes and intricate lines because of how chunky the pastels are so it did not turn out very clean and I only had a more tinted yellow then the true colour of the shoe hence the brightness. The two pages I used acrylic paint on the materials I paired them with did not behave as well as I wanted, due to the glossiness of the magazine page the paint was not setting as well as it would on a regular sketchbook page, so the lines were left transparent, in a way I like the messiness and the contrast between the background colours almost makes you have to look for the shoe. The tissuepaper and paint also did not feel great, it was too flimsy. I could not get a strong layer of colour, and they did not mix very well which made it muddy being the reason for the addition of fine liner. Doing this exercise showed me what materials and tools I am most comfortable working with and how to adapt when using the different medias or materials together. It gives me more of a variety of possible choices to use if I don’t want to stick to traditional drawing/ painting.

The combination that wored best was the pen on the brown envelope, the brown makes the black stand out more I think. Its darker udertones also set a moodier atmosphere to the shoe. Because its pen the scribbles and lines are bold as if the ink bled a little which makes its so dramatic. I think the texture of the envelope too was different from the thicker sketch paper I used for some of the others so, the pen had more fluidity but there was a harsher feeling pressure on the pen.

My favourite variation of the shoe is the one where I did it with my eyes closed. I love how you can see all the features and components of the shoe but its scattered like someones took it apart to create multiple layers of the shoe visible. You can kind of tell its supposed to be a shoe but maybe thats because I'm aware of what It is. Another thing I like about this one is the little squiggles in random places that with my eyes closed felt like I was really doing good with the placement of things but then opening my eyes to reveal the mess I was so confident about.
