People and Place reflection and feedback

Reflect in your learning log about what you learned and enjoyed most from this part of the course and what you might use in the next section that will focus on People and Places. Choose some of these questions as a starting point:

  • What were the main challenges you encountered when working with unusual drawing techniques and how did you overcome them?
I think the public drawing sessions were a bit out of my comfort zones, but I've actually started to enjoy it. I have also incoportated a but more colour and different medias when doing outside observations rather then sticking to pencil with no colour. i suppose im still a bit uncomfortable with drawing in public but I'm a lot more confident especially because my sketchbook is often small and my media is easy to carry.

  • Now you have drawn with unusual materials, what techniques or materials are you going to use within your next sketchbook?
The artists I research I think i can take a bit of inspiration when doing my own work like I did for the final assignment. The use of more colour is my main goal as I dont use it often. I will use more pastel and charcoal and random liquids like coffee or juice. Also the adding of physical things like pictures, tickets, postcards or something acquired on a journey to give a story to the pages.
  • How did you find moving from observed drawings towards using ideas and more of an imaginative approach?
I like both observed and imaginative drawing because where I have observed things as reference I can put my own twist on it to give it surreal or different story adding characters or changing shapes, perspectives...I like being imaginative with my drawings cause then I can call them my own. I enjoy creative freedom because when youre copying something from observation there has to be an element of accuracy and it can be a slower process where as using ideas and imagination can take you into a creative flow where things like perspective, accuracy ancd colours dont matter as much.
  • What have you learned about drawing quickly that you can take forward when you look at drawing people in part three?
I think I have adapted every time I've had to draw quickly with my technique, contnious line drawing is really good for capturing shapes and the drawing can often be done in minimal or one pencil/pen line. I have also had to try let go of the perfection side a bit by not judging myself when making mistakes or not gettign the likeness of a person because the whole point is to work fast and just capture the essence or shapes of figures and the surroundings. So taking this forward I feel like putting less pressure on myself and being free with whatever tool im using not only helps relax me but my focus on detail has changed which brings out new styles and the speed.
  • Which of the illustrators mentioned in this section work did you most enjoy looking at and why?
There were a few artists whos work I really enjoyed loking through including Margaret Huber whos work was weird and a bit creepy which I loved. Dina Brodsky and artist who maked beautifully painted skecthbooks using a lot of natrual influence and callipgraphy and collage. For assignment 3 my final piece was influenced by Bryce Wymer who creates cartoons that are minimalistic and weird, the colour palette is very simple and I just liked the overall style so I created my pages in the same style.
  • If you haven’t joined a sketchbook circle yet do you feel ready to join one?
I dont know when or if I will join a sketchbook series, I understand that it would be good to connect with others but I like to work by myself and I dont think im ready enough to share my whole body of work. I hear part of the circles sometimes mail eachother eachothers and they all add something or have a flick through which I dont know if id like to participate in just yet.

Reflecting on the part as a whole and feedback:
This part was quite enjoyable for the observational exercises and getting outside rather then working from pictures or sitting at home. I liked the artists in this part too a lot more then I have previously for some reason, The research I didnt mind as much becasue of this. The only part that was a bit tedious was there was a lot of research tasks to do an I get bored easily. Never the less it still introdued me too artists that influenced my assignment. After receiving feedback I think i need to start incoporating more medias into my work and more colour and maybe expanding a little more on exercise reflections. I am also working on trying to simplify my blog as its a bit confusing to navigate.
