Part 2 Exercise 1:Reflection on writing a brief

The thought of Writing the brief at first it seemed like I would not be able to do it out confusion but once I started planning what needed to be included it became a little easier. Looking at the forums at other students’ submissions for this exercise really helped me when trying to find a layout and the type of subheading I was going to expand on. I explored the who, what why.... so, I did not miss anything, to add on I provided some ideas for the artist to research to create the piece envisioned. If it were me being commissioned, I would have loved the extra research part because I would want to know exactly what the person was thinking and every little detail they could provide.

To plan I first wrote down the questions like what the purpose of the art. is...the requirements, goals, the deadline and what the project was about. I then did a bit of research on the game trying to use official sources like Sony and Naughty dog as well as the artist’s blog. I also read the synopsis of the game and created the backstory using my knowledge of playing. When describing the details of what the company wanted, I had the image in the background and created a little list based on what I saw and this hopefully would have given the artist an idea for the theme, environment and what the context of the Illustration would be.

I picked the concept art from the game the Last of Us as I had such an amazing experience when playing through. The art, colours and atmosphere were unbelievable, parts were so realistic, and I really admire and find the work of John Sweeney the concept artist behind this game fascinating. I have never fully explored concept art myself, yet one of my goals will be to learn the techniques to make similar work digitally as I feel I have a good imagination for things but do not have all the skills to create exactly what I want to.
