Visual Languages project 1: Exercise 1 - Word processing

This first exercise was to create a 'poem' like selection of words that were found through using the dictonary tool on Word in which I read through the synonyms of a chosen word and repeating this until I had 30 words.

old grizzled silver coin mold earth planet moon loaf dawdle idle lazy heavy fat bloat balloon envelope wrapper jacket shell bullet shot explosion thunder roar flash flare burst rain shower.

I then drew pictures of each word in order on a piece of paper, I didn't spend very long drawing them as they were only general ideas of the type of illustrions which I would be merging them all together to create 1 bigger image.

I combined all of these words/images then into one picture. I had two goes before finally being satisfied with the outcome and compostion.

This first try was just to see how I would arrange and mix the words together to create a scene.
Next attempt was to refine the concept of the scene adding some personality and using the images in a way so they made more sense being together.

Finally I created the scene in a way I feel flows a lot better then the rough versions above. It was a little hard to connect all the words together without it looking so forced. But I believe there is just the right amount of randomness to compliment the flow of the 'poem'.

How I got the images to work together faily well was to merge tow or three togther such as the earth being a ground and each of the countries being made out of mold. I put lazy, old, fat together with the old man sitting in the chair. Not only is he doing that but he is also holding a 'shot' and eating a loaf of bread surrounded by empty wrappers bottles and cans.

One of these empty cans is being kicked by a child who is dawdling. The person he is with is getting soaked by a shower of rain but luckly hes wearing a jacket. The person in the jacket you can see is throwing coins to the snail mail man who is carrying a heavy shell of envelopes. This mail man is being thrown by an explosion beneath.

Another merging of words is the moon being a balloon being burst by a silver bullet surrounded by flares in the sky. There is a lion roaring a shower too, it has grizzled hair.

Final parts I used thunder clouds with a flash suggesting a storm. You can also see there is an idle figure standing still on one of these clouds too.

Reflecting on this first practical exercise it was a good task to ease into the unit. It got my mind thinking up some creative ideas again after being on a break since the last module. I'm hopefully they're will be more creative challenges I can play with throughout this unit.
