Sketchbook as Object part 2: Investigating a process 2.2

Taking inpsipration from Lucys work into my own sketchbook I created 'chapters' of different mediums and techniques. I had a lot of fun working like Lucy Austin, I loved experimenting with the colours and techniques like layering and using different tools like big brushes, tape, paper, pen. There was a freedom when creating I didn’t know when to stop there was always a gap to fill or a bit of texture to add. I used acrylic paint, white pen, card, tape, and pastel.

I did keep them quite simple design wise, but I got a bit intricate with the paper layering and shapes. I ended up cutting loads of different colours of paper into different shapes and then just placed them all over the page. I like the colour scheme for this one, the little bits of pink tie all the colours in.

This one I did with acrylic, the shapes I used you can see how it was influenced by Lucy’s work and she used similar black angled shapes and lines. I had no plan how I wanted this to turn out I just grabbed a brush and painted, to finish it off I got a dry bigger brush an dragged some white in various areas just to break up the technique and take a but of focus of the black and a toothbrush to make little odd prints.

This one I really liked how it turned out. There’s a darkness in the colour scheme It reminds me a bit of a horror film like bloody fingerprints or claw marks. I think the background me using torn pieces of green bushes from a magazine also gives it a crime feeling. The masking tape and green tape gives it a little more edge, you can still see the background through the strips, so it doesn’t take anything away from the overall pages. In a way I can imagine this is like the patterns and colours you see in a killer’s head, bit of darkness and gore.

Finally, I did these pages with pastel, and this is my least favourite out of all of them. It just isn’t as aesthetic as the others, the patterns are a bit to blocky and I don’t like the black shapes anhttps://www.instagram.com/claudiadrexhage/d lines I used. I think its quite ugly maybe with the chalkiness of the pastel. The one thing I do like is the colours, they’re quite warm and natural. Without the black it reminds me of spring.
