Part 2 Exercise 8: A subjective drawing

 I picked Sunglasses

My chosen word to develop was BURNT. Ideally, I would have liked to use the word honey to along with it because that is what first came to mind. Their appearance reminds me of a thick rich brown liquid honey with dashes of burnt parts all moulded into the shape of a pair of glasses.

The process: Firstly, I got a piece of baking paper as I had no tracing paper. Using stick of charcoal drew on both sides the same shape pressing harder on side. Then on an a3 piece of paper I painted it in a similar slightly more bold brown like the glasses before putting the baking paper over it and began drawing over the lines with a biro pressing hard and creating a fainted outline on the bottom piece that I could then fully recreate. I took a more modern approach using some sharp and choppy movements with the charcoal to resemble burn marks. I was trying to think of other materials to use when I found some heavy black duct tape that was I tiny bit reflective like the lenses where on the glasses. The illustration is displaced and not very proportionate because I feel if the object were not solid, it would take more random shape such as what I did with some black candle wax carefully pouring it in the general shape id created letting it run over other parts of the page. This is how I would imagine the black parts of the glasses would behave if it were liquid or goo inside and the frame has been smashed letting it splash, drop, and puddle everywhere. I finally wanted to replicate the shimmer seen when the object was moved in the light, so I experimented with gold acrylic paint just on some parts to see if it was as effective.

Overall, I enjoyed most element of this exercise I got to be a bit random with the materials and experiment with candle wax which I might try again with in the future. I did not expect the final result to be as successful as it was because of how long it took deciding on how or what I was going to do.

I kind of like this version better before adding the gold ^ i feel like theres more emotion because there is a focus on the darkness of the wax. I can maybe see this possible on the cover of a thriller book or an article on something fashion related like the dark side of the industry or something along the lines of materialism.

 final piece

I still do like the little hints of gold as it reflects the original photograph abit more with the lighting and such and the subtle glittery look to the main body of the glasses.
