Exercise 2: Getting the gist

Exercise 2: Getting the gist

For this exercise I used one of my Mums ‘Take a break’ magazines, the issue seemed to be full of psychic and ghostly articles and reading and such I thought it might contain something interesting to illustrate. I picked a small article/story about a man Stephen who experienced a day full of strange events which left him convinced it was his mother trying to reach him form the afterlife. Reading through I picked out little parts and words that I could put together and tried a few different compositions till I found a good one. In the text he mentioned that the shadow he sees on the ceiling must be a nun his mum sent to watch over, his mum who was catholic when alive loved a film called “The Nun story” from 1959 and the shadow looked like one of the characters, so it was only right I used an image of the one I thought resembled it the most. In this illustration I also used my hand as a reference.

I started out with a little spider map to jot down the general idea and then broke it down into specific words of things I could draw, sketching the things I was going to include.

The next page was just sketches again finding a good layout to do the final illustration. I also used my hand and a picture of the nun form the movie I thought the shadow resembled the most.

Final Illustration all done in Pencil (mechincal) and not.

A quote from the psychic in the text commented about how the white feather that fell on Stephens shoulder was “straight from heaven” I thought it was a nice title to give the illustration.
