Illustrating sketchbooks - Everday Sketchbooks Part 1: Exercise 1.0

What sort of sketchbook should I use?

Firstly, this was a good introduction to this 'Illustrating sketchbooks' starting with this exercise I answered the questions about how I use a sketchbook and my feelings. I also got to experiment with making my own sketchbooks leaving me with options if I didn’t want to buy a new sketchbook.

I then started to experiment with making different type of sketchbooks and mini booklets.

This first little a4 piece was fun to design, I moved away from making mini books and crafting, which is a shame cause there’s something novel about creating a mini version of something. I hope this part of the course will bring that creative side back out of me.

My idea was just to have a silly cartoon and for some reason carrots came to mind, it’s just a little book about a women showing you some of her favourite carrots (named). I used sharpies to colour which I thought might be a bit risky in case they bleed through such thin paper but the way in which the paper was folded there was an extra layer between each mini page so the ink printing onto other pages was minimal.

Another small booklet I created was done using a variety of papers, A notebook back piece, lined sheet, a birthday card, and a piece of beige paper. I have yet to draw in it, but I might incorporate it in a sketchbook page in the future and add to it.

I did round the corners because I like how it looks but the materials, I chose made it a bit tough to cut cause they’re all quite thick. I still like the colour palette, however.
