People and Place part 3: Research - Reporting and documenting 3.3
I was asked to compare the image to a photograph of a similar subject matter (you will find suitable photos in
google images, youtube, in old magazines or newspapers, in second hand books etc.)
ILLUSTRATION
Using reportage.org I found an illustrator called Mike Fay who was the official combat artist for the United States Marine Corp from 2000-2010; who completed four combat tours as a war artist, two each in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is one of his pieces.

PHOTOGRAPH
This photograph was found on GettyImages.co.uk taken by Joe Raedle of a member of the Ukrainian military attends the funeral for Fedorchyk Ihor Vododymyrovych at the Church of the Most Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.Raedle working at Getty has meant he has photgraphed a varety of things such as festivities in the bayous of Louisiana to the mountain peaks of war-torn Afghanistan and the deserts of Iraq.He was a student at the Maine Photographic Workshop in Rockport. He was hired as a staff photographer at Fort Lauderdale's Sun-Sentinel in 1987 and his 11-year tenure there took him across the globe.

Both are showing the shocking realities of war, The impact death has. The illustration gives a lot more context with the dead bodies behind the solider and another being carried by other soldiers; it makes it clear what he is crying about. However, the photograph even without that clear context you can sense what the picture is portraying, he is in military uniform with a devastated and tired expression standing in front church doors. Both are showing grief just different times in the process the illustration being a more immediate portrayal of grief and the photograph is the aftermath at the funeral where it’s a final goodbye.
• Which image do you think is most memorable?
It’s a hard one because each are powerful images. I would maybe say the illustration is the most memorable, I think it’s because it shows the truth of what’s happening in the image itself, the boot sticking out of the tarp, the helmet placed at the side as well as the bloody on the hand sticking out. You can almost feel the pain of the man crying, he’s lost his friends, and is surrounded by death. It’s those details of the bloody hand and helmet and such that puts it in perspective.
• Does one image seem more truthful and why?
I think the photograph seems a lot more truthful because it’s taken with a camera not drawn by someone who can easily exaggerate or change the image to fit their narrative even if they’re trying to be truthful a drawing is through their eyes. A camera lens captures what it sees in front of it and because its high quality you can see the expression of the soldiers face clearly there’s not hiding in front of the camera.
• Which image would you be more likely to notice if it was in a magazine or
newspaper and why?
I think the illustration has a lot more going on, again it’s those little details included that makes the image more powerful. It is revealing the realities of war. There’s more urgency to the illustration also with the soldiers carrying the body in the back you feel like you’re there with them watching the action take place. The photograph on the other hand provokes slightly different feelings I think a funeral is relatable to a lot more people, so the image is something to sympathise with cause a lot know the pain of a funeral whereas less people are familiar with combat and fighting a war. So, although the photograph seems a lot more relatable, I still think the illustration has more power being more graphic and does a good job of showing the harsh realities.
I also revisited Veronica Lawlors 9/11 reportage drawings and compared them to real life photos of the event.
• What is each image expressing, describing, or communicating?
Both are showing the aftermath of the buildings collapsing as seen by the smoke in the background and the police being in the forfront of the picture you can see how they are all there to help and corden off the city with the tape and with help of an ambulance in the photograph.
• Which image do you think is most memorable?
I think the real photograph is more memorable just because it's a real life visual rather then Veronica's who has drew the scene from her perspective.
• Does one image seem more truthful and why?
Similarly to the other question the real photograph is more truthful as its taken with a camera that only capture the things infront of their lenses where as the drawing only has a particular focuse and has less clear details.
• Which image would you be more likely to notice if it was in a magazine or newspaper and why?
Both would do well but the drawing I think is a different still gets the message across without being to real in the sense of being a but to morbid for the audience, its a personal take on the tragedy and It als puts more emphasis of the heroes that helped on that day (Emergency services)
