Summation Part 5:Taking Stock 5.0

This is almost like a bit of a reflection on the sketchbooks and work done in this section, changes, feelings, and thoughts that I could maybe implement to future work. How my journey is going so far.

This is a list of materials and processes I feel connected to and another list of the exercises and processes I dint enjoy.

What words I most empathise with:

• Have your opinions and thoughts changed about how you keep a sketchbook?

They haven’t really changed; I still only use my sketchbook as a tool or aid to and exercise unless I get a good idea for a page or a new creation.

• Which comments do you now most empathise with and why?

l feel great joy at flicking through my old, complete sketchbooks, and am often surprised at rediscovering things I had forgotten about. l almost never leave the house without a sketchbook, even if I don't use it, I feel better carrying it around, just in case. - Michi S I struggle with it. I'm still trying to find a way to interact properly with it - Lynda A love hate relationship really. Once I am sketching in my sketch book I enjoy it, but don't like the thought of using it. I am always in a rush to try and start out my piece and I feel like my sketchbook is a waste of time. Although I know this isn't the case and I actually come up with more ideas or better ideas through using it. I think I
dislike my sketchbook when I am feeling lazy or if I am excited by a piece and I want to start straight away. - Lola O’shea It's a tool that helps me develop observational skills that l am poor at. Sometimes l enjoy filling a sketchbook but other times l much prefer working on paper. At present I am trying a drawing a day and pinning the drawings up using different media. - Lesley Norman I love it and wish I could spend more time with it.. occasionally frustrated when I can't get ideas right…but trying to develop a more regular relationship!! Heidi S I would say close up and personal as after I have completed the course it will be in my library. You take out a book after not looking at it for some time and enjoy the experience it gave you in the first place. I will do the same and reflect looking at my sketchbooks in the same way. - lan Meechan On and off. I'm not very faithful. I want to be, but other stuff gets in the way, but I'm getting comfortable with the position they hold in my practice. They're part of a wider ecology. - Bryan Eccleshall Hit and miss! I sometimes struggle with sketchbooks and know I should do more. - JMA Yes, all the time and have to resist the urge to tear out or cover over those pages... - Jane Coxhill I do try not to make mistakes as I like to be neat but when mistakes happen, I leave them in or paste over if they're really bad! I like learning from mistakes so am resigned to them being part of the outcomes. - SJM

I empathise with these the most as I do still struggle with the motivation to use a sketchbook from my own accord, I am also still intimated by blank space and making mistakes. I have learnt a few techniques throughout the course so far however that will make the process of using a sketchbook a little smoother.

• What have been the most surprising changes to your thoughts about sketchbooks?

How the simple use of a magazine page or random pictures can work great as a way to fill the background on a page through means of collage or just as it is. It also easy and quick and less intimidating then having to fill the page with mediums if that’s not the main focus.

• Which of the exercises and assignments would you like to do more of or return to?

I enjoy drawing people and figures such as when I went out to the gallery to fill up all the pages as fast as I could. Another exercise I like to also use the tea and coffee and the ones that focussed on linework like continuous line, rapid sketching, limited line or making shapes into other things. During this part I didn't mind looking at a few different illustrators it was a more specific set of people rather than an overwhelming amount. The storyboarding exercise was one of my favourite I just got so into it and I also got to watch as I drew, it made me look at film and TV a bit differently within the shots and perspectives and how they behave with the actors on screen. Assignment 4 building stories was also fun, the fact this picture of a wooden draw has been created into this mini origin story of this character chip, it could definitely be developed further and making it into a series. The exercise 2.5 the scrap book journey gave me the opportunity to be creative and a fitting my sketchbook pages being interactive with fold downs and pull throughs. 2.6 was good too I unconsciously look for faces and everything now I think this technique will be good for my own personal way anything to create original characters. Finally, I didn't mind the people and crowds exercise activity that it took me out of my comfort zone, and it gave me a challenge out in public. I will definitely be using these techniques in my future work.

Phrases and words that sum up the goals and objectives that would be good for me to focus on from Feedback from reports:

“Making the blog easier to navigate”

“Good to see you demonstrate that you are looking at art more in general”

“Adding some colour”

“Remember to reflect on feedback”
