Sequence and Narrative reflection and feedback

Reflection for part 4

How did including written description alongside your drawing affect the way you were ‘capturing’ information?

I think it gave more context to just the drawings it was also a quicker option if I couldn’t capture the scene fast enough. I also could add my thoughts or feelings to go along with the drawings. In exercise 4.1 putting text in place of the actual object was a good way of mapping out the scene without having to sit there and observe for ages.

How did you find the process of moving from descriptive drawings towards fictional narratives?

I enjoyed the journey of creating a whole story or new narrative out of little random sketches or previous exercises. I could use Quentin Blake’s technique of making something different to give it a new narrative. The drawings I gave fictional narratives to I gave emotions and thoughts to them; a funny or silly personality and I can be as creative as I want. It makes the process of building a story that much easier cause you’ve now thought of all these scenarios. Chip a character drawn previously is an example of this as now he has a whole background and story to go along with him and his personality.

We talked about having conversations with previous illustrations, which of the illustrators mentioned in this section’s work did you have most dialogue with?

I didn’t particularly focus on one, but I was influenced a lot by the artist Alison Aletha. I used a similar magical cosy style and tried to replicate that feeling her work has into my building stories assignment book, I even was inspired to buy gouache and test it out because I love the look it creates colour and consistency wise.

Feedback

I really dug deep into this part, I think my style is becoming a bit more refined and I liked the challenge of each of these exercises. Reading the feedback, I will definitely continue with these exercises and add to future assignments and explore all creative options in each exercise where I can merge all the techniques and skills to make for a in depth body of work.
