Form and Function Part 2 Reflection

Part 2: Form and Function was a greater introduction into books design, Things like the structure and materials used I had to research and consider whereas I have only really focused on the illustration and general design. I was able to use some typography to tie in the designs and get more in depth in the creation and steps of a book.

This part was a lot more technical than I’ve had to be so far. There were measurements and sizing to think about, the page thickness and paper stock and how they behave together. I've enjoyed the process of constructing the mock ups even if they were only pasted design over existing books. Having my design in front of me and in my hand was nice.

Another part of the research that I really took in was the interviews and podcast episodes of some of the graphic designs and book designers given in the brief, having the background and process of their works was fascinating and it gave me some inspiration to maybe try think outside of the box in the future, create something unconventional that may not even look like a book or have the textures or shape you’d expect.

Feedback

In regards to the feedback I received I just need to keep exploring all directions of the brief, experimenting more with designs, and comparing each version. Once again, the research I still need to brush up on just to make sure I haven’t missed out on anything that could make my work the best it can be. The use of thumbnail sketches is a good planning technique for me, and I think I'd benefit from mocking up the designs digitally so again I can compare and make my designs stronger.
